well, I couldn’t agree more. Growing up as a military kid, my family moved around a lot, so I learned early how important having a good group of friends is, especially in the absence of extended family. When my dad was medically retired, however, my family was forced into a smaller minority of families in the United States, the injured Veteran population. Since then, it’s been harder to make friends because not everyone has experienced what it’s like to live in a family where mental health and invisible wounds are discussed as casually as the weather and football is in other homes. 

While finding community is not always easy, if you do not have a supportive network of people around you, that can make so much in your life infinitely more difficult. I will not pretend like I am an expert at finding good people to surround myself with, but I will say that I am the kind of person who, when I realized that a certain community didn’t exist, I decided to make it for myself. 

I started a blog called We Signed Up Too with a mission to bring community and awareness to children of wounded, ill and injured Veterans. I could never have dreamed that by starting my blog, not only would I be helping others find community and support, but I would find the community I could only dream of, friends who have become like family. 

So, if you are the child of wounded, ill, or injured Veterans, welcome to We Signed Up Too, I hope that it can provide you with some support wherever you are in life. If you are not a part of the Veteran community, you are welcome too. Community is not about finding people who can relate to you 100%, it’s about diversity, and connection. Not everyone’s story is the same, but we are all human, and we all crave connection. It is my hope that We Signed Up Too will be for you what it has been for me, a lifeline, that glimmer of hope at the end of a dark tunnel. And that community is only a click away…
