Bringing Community and Awareness to Children of Wounded, Ill and Injured Veterans
Quick Overview
Hello friend!
Welcome to We Signed Up Too where our goal is to “Bring community and awareness to children of wounded, ill and injured Veterans.” This blog is exactly where we do just that. Whether you are watching a craft video in the Kids Corner or interacting with others through the blog’s comment section, it is our hope that We Signed Up Too will be a safe place for you, because we know what it is like to feel unheard, isolated and alone.
Did you know that according to Elizabeth Dole there are 2.3 million military children living in the homes of wounded warriors? That is a huge number. The reality is many do not know about the situation of these kids, and in turn, it is not easy for kids to reach out for help. We Signed Up Too is here to act as a lifeline. We want to break through the stigma that has surrounded these families for far too long and bring community to the children wherever they may find themselves. We are delighted you have found us and excited to go on this journey with you.
The Full Story
Our names are Sinaiyah and Azara Emami. We were born into an active-duty military family so almost immediately were thrown into the constant moves and stress of military lifestyle. It was not until our father was medically retired in 2018 that our lives became less mobile. Little did we know, however, that we would land from one small population to a different one entirely. Almost overnight our family went from being a “military” family to categorized as “wounded, ill and injured” because of the injuries my father sustained during his service to our country. This all happened when we were younger, so the repercussions didn’t hit us that hard then.
It wasn’t until years later that the gravity of our situation really settled in on us. We began to realize that the general public was not aware of the hardship that families with wounded, ill and injured members had to deal with. This became clear for us in 2023 when our family endured an especially hard time, and we had no support. Sinaiyah records this in her article We Signed Up Too. We were sad to see that this lack of knowledge led to stigma around topics such as mental illness and as we experienced, isolation and loneliness followed. That is when we knew something had to change.
After much praying and seeking guidance from our parents, we decided to start a blog called We Signed Up Too that would bring community and awareness to these children, two very different goals, that when put together have power to shed light on some of the most resilient individuals. Our hope is that whatever walk of life you are in, whether you are a child of a wounded, ill and injured Veteran or not, that We Signed Up Too will be a safe haven for you. Welcome to our blog.
